This is a post from a close friend of mine who is a drum tech for many different touring bands right now. He is extremely knowledgeable on this subject, and I figured it would be appropriate to post this.
"Why Pearl is better then DW.
Pearl Lacquers the insides of thier shells to give the drums a brighter sound, DW does not.
Pearl uses dedicated combo head lug screws (Hex and phillips) with integrated washers, DW uses cheap, zinc plated phillips screws with star washers that mar the shells.
Pearl uses low mass lugs. DW uses large, bulky lugs which nearly three times the surface area as Pearl.
Pearl uses true Isolation mounts which do not contact the shell at any point. They also can be easily re-positioned and removed for cleaning without removing the heads or removing any screws. DW uses a mounting system that still contacts the shell at some points and that requires the complete removal of one head plus removal of 12 screws to facilitate shell cleaning or for repostioning.
Pearl Masters kits come standard with Die Cast hoops yet still cost HUNDREDS less then DW's in comparable finishes. While you may prefer to use Flanged hoops, the point is Pearl is giving you the more expensive hoop type for far less then DW charges for the much lower priced Flanged hoop.
Pearl Masters kits in Lacquer finishes on average cost $1,000 less then a DW kit in comparable sizes in a WRAP!. That price difference nearly doubles if you go with a Lacquer in a DW.
Pearl Masterworks offers two lug styles (DW only offers one), unlimited finish types including graphics plus multiple wood types in each shell.
Customer service wise, Pearl blows DW and every other drum company out of the water. This is a FACT, not an opinion. Pearl offers publicised 800 numbers for customer service that are actually answered by PEOPLE. They have the forum that gives you near instant answers plus the ability to email product and customer service reps directly.
As a customer of DW's and as a salesperson working at GC I can tell you DW's customer service is TERRIBLE. Whenever i would call to order parts, kits or ask questions i was almost always met with voice mail or inept people who respond to every question with "I am not sure, hold on". It usually takes them hours and sometimes days to return phone calls. They really need to hire more customer service staff and better train the staff they have now.
I have owned two DW kits and sold over a dozen of them plus built twice that number. There is NOTHING i have found that DW offers that Pearl does not that justifies such a huge price increase.
I am not saying DW does not make a great product, i am simply pointing out why i think you can get FAR more for your money with Pearl or even Tama. Ultimatley, go with what you like best. But look at both brands closely. Pull the heads off a DW and Pearl Masters tom side by side and look and feel the differences."
Good choice on going with Aquarian flam. Bout the design for the head of the bass, you sure the same design as the shells will look good?
Post some pics if you manage to get a "prototype".

I need a hole, plus it had a brown stripe going thru it, which looked messy. It sounded nice, but I can't deal with the action of a solid front head. I will be getting either an EMAD or an Aquarian Superkick for the batter. For the front, I will most likely take a picture of the the drum shell's finish, send it to www.vintagelogos.com and make a nice graphic head to match the look of the kit. They do excellent work. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
